USS Pampanito (SS-383) DANFS

Arrving in San Francisco late in the afternoon, time allowed for a quick inspection of the Pampanito, moored at San Francisco's Maritime Park near Fisherman's Wharf. Unfortunately, my estimate was a bit optimistic and the lateness of the hour precluded pausing for interior shots (that's the fastest I've ever moved through a submarine), but the ship is clearly in excellent hands. The Pampanito appears much as she did in 1945 with a good deal of original and era-authentic equipment installed. In fact, much of her machinery runs today, including three of the four diesel engines. Since my visit, she has been drydocked (for the 3rd time since she was opened to the public in 1982) and the restoration work continues. Next time you visit Fisherman's Wharf, be sure to start at the western end and see the Pampanito.
