USS Edson (DD-946) DANFS

The Edson lies immediately beyond USS Growler (SSG-577) as you walk down the pier. The Edson, a Forrest Sherman class destroyer, was built in 1958 and was the last of the class to be retired. Open for touring were the bridge, CIC, weather decks and the galley. Unknown circumstances prevented more of the ship from being open that day, but she appeared to be in excellent shape. The forward 5" turret doors were open and allowed closer inspection of a design bridging the guns of World War II and today. The bridge presented a view of the western Manhattan skyline, a curious sight compared to most memorial locations.
